On the day before he was assassinated, Martin Luther King Jr. spoke of looking over to the Promised Land. "I might not get there with you," he said, "but we as a people will get to the Promised Land." He is shown here in a composition borrowed from Benjamin West in a painting of a similar theme. The angels are William Lloyd Garrison, Harriet Beecher Stowe, Abraham Lincoln, Harriet Tubman, Frederick Douglass, and Mahatma Gandhi.
